| Monuments should be installed using a rock breaker with a 7/8" chuck to meet manufacturers specifications. This ensures accurate vertical control and maximum penetration | It is possible to install monuments with a sledgehammer and manual adaptor, but stability will not be as good and maximum penetration will not be achieved. | ||

| A 12" hole is augered to a depth of about 3.5 ft | Rod monument driven to refusal, until top is about 6" below surface | Finned sleeve placed over rod, filled with grease & s.s. datum point added |

| A 6" PVC pipe with access cover glued on, is placed over the finned sleeve. Hole & pipe are backfilled with sand. | Top 12" is back-filled with concrete | The finished mark - a well protected first-order bench mark. |
